# What You Need:

→ Blackberry Syrup

01 - 1/2 cup fresh blackberries
02 - 1/4 cup granulated sugar
03 - 1/4 cup water
04 - 1 tsp lemon juice

→ Charcoal Base

05 - 1/4 tsp food-grade activated charcoal powder
06 - 1 cup cold sparkling water
07 - 1 tbsp fresh lime juice
08 - 1 tsp agave syrup, or simple syrup, to taste

→ Garnish & Assembly

09 - Crushed ice
10 - Fresh blackberries for garnish
11 - Lemon or lime wheels for garnish
12 - Fresh mint sprigs (optional)

# How to Make It:

01 - Combine blackberries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan. Simmer over medium heat, gently mashing berries, for 3 to 4 minutes until syrupy. Remove from heat, stir in lemon juice. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding solids. Allow syrup to cool.
02 - Fill two tall glasses with crushed ice. In a small pitcher, mix sparkling water, activated charcoal powder, lime juice, and agave syrup. Stir until charcoal dissolves completely and mixture turns jet black. Pour charcoal base over ice, filling each glass about three-quarters full. Slowly layer 2 tablespoons of blackberry syrup over the back of a spoon into each glass to create a layered effect.
03 - Decorate with fresh blackberries, a lemon or lime wheel, and optional mint sprigs. Serve immediately for best presentation.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It looks like pure magic in a glass, the kind of drink that makes people stop mid-conversation to ask what it is.
  • No alcohol means you can serve it at any gathering without anyone feeling left out, and it tastes intentional, not like a consolation prize.
  • The whole thing takes fifteen minutes from craving to sipping, so you can make it on a Tuesday night without planning ahead.
02 -
  • The activated charcoal absolutely must be food-grade, and it needs to be stirred thoroughly until it's completely dissolved or you'll have gritty sediment at the bottom of your glass, which is not the vibe.
  • The layering only works if your syrup is cool enough and poured slowly enough, so don't rush this part or everything will blend into an undifferentiated gray.
03 -
  • Pour the blackberry syrup slowly over the back of a spoon held just above the ice to prevent it from sinking too quickly and muddying your charcoal layer.
  • If your activated charcoal seems gritty even after thorough stirring, strain the charcoal base through cheesecloth before pouring to remove any undissolved particles that will ruin the mouthfeel.
